created by Visual Artist Brigid Mulligan in lockdown. Adapting to a home studio and using accessible material of charcoal and paper Mulligan used the process of drawing to calm a racing mind. The work comprises of a short charcoal animation and charcoal drawings. Formication is the sensation of something crawling underneath your skin, derived from the Latin word ‘Formica’ which means ant. ‘FORMICATION’ 2021 looks into domestic space while experiencing acute anxiety in isolation. The animation considers the everyday ritual in the tasks taken that attempt to find moments of solace. These moments are quickly flooded with unease and discomfort. The underlying sense of dread that can be misinterpreted in silence. The process begins with one drawing and no predetermined outcome. The drawing leads the story, by manipulation through erasing and building up of charcoal the story unfolds. There is an implication of humour in the bizarre domestic horror that has been developed through recording sounds within the apartment. The drawings recently created in isolation on residency in Kerry are a contemplation of a cognitive glitch, how the mind can fill in empty spaces with insidious thoughts. Surrounded with pattern in the pre famine house in Cill Rialiag, the artist experienced ‘Pareidolia’ the human tendency to seek pattern in random information. BRIGID MULLIGAN | BIO In 2018 Mulligan gained a Masters-in-creative Practice from CCAM Galway. Mulligan received a First-Class Honours Degree in Fine Art Sculpture from CCAM Galway, in 2009. Her work has been exhibited in group shows in various Museums and Galleries nationwide which include ‘Bring the mind home’, Artlink’s members show, ‘Westival’, Westport Arts festival, ‘In Situ’, 126 Gallery Galway, ‘M:A 18’, Connacht Tribune Gallery, ‘Impressions’ Galway International Arts Festival, ’Printed Matter’, Galway Print Studio and ‘Put a lid on it’ Galway Arts Centre. An orbital member of Engage Studio’s Galway since 2019, in collaboration with Sample studios Cork ‘Chandelier’ 2018 was selected and virtually exhibited in Cahoots: The Space Between 2020. Awards include Artist in the community R&D award with mentoring from Create Ireland & the Arts Council, Agility award from the Arts Council of Ireland & Artist Support Scheme, Galway County Council 2021. Currently on home residency with DAS Studios Belfast developing a digital shrine through sound and animation. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/59fa12bb29f1879cb0ea108a/1624973196416-48G8U86CVP8LRA8QZ8Q1/APC_0076-Karen-Conway.jpg Projects Mapping the Science of Pandemic Art, the Journey to find a Vaccine... ‘Project Y’ is an exhibition of new work by Galway artist Karen Conway which will simultaneously launch in ‘Engage Studios’ and on the artist’s website on Monday, the 5th July. The project was part-funded by the Arts Council of Ireland's Covid-19 Award and is an observation of the Medtech/Pharma industry’s response to the then-evolving pandemic as it raced to discover a vaccine. Before the pandemic, Conway had been the artist in residence with CÚRAM/SFI, NUI Galway conducting research from the Biopharmaceutical Science Laboratory there. When the SARS-COV 2 virus arrived, scientific research went from being very low on the radar of the general public's interest to becoming central to all news broadcasts. Likewise, artistic practices followed this trend with subject matter focusing not only on science but also looking at the human cost of the pandemic which appeared to dominate the production of new work, both in professional and amateur practices. Conway's working method involved keeping meticulous notes about the situation and then documenting all works on social media as they were made, linking in with the Irish Medtech/Pharma industry, and observing how Ireland was emerging as a world leader in the evolving scientific research. On show in the gallery will be three drawings, the first one, the title drawing - a large 6ft x 4ft drawing using pencil and graphite on Fabriano paper, it was completed entirely from photographs supplied by a leading Pharma company 1 It visually pieces together the information and images acquired through research and was informed both by video linked conversations with the staff there and by consideration to the evolving scientific research that was taking place in Ireland at such an accelerated pace. At the center of this title drawing, we see an image of a laboratory where scientists are working; they are flanked either side by machines and bioreactors which connect to a plant where the manufacturing of a much-awaited vaccine will take place. The second drawing, ‘Lauren Leaving Helsinki in Swimming Goggles and an Industrial Mask After Finland Calls a State of Emergency, 17th March 2020’ is another 6ft large graphite drawing made on Fabriano paper made shortly after the WHO declared that COVID-19 was to be characterized as a pandemic. The artist explained that her daughter had to abruptly leave her Erasmus studies at the University of the Fine Arts Helsinki and that this drawing was made from a photo sent to her from an empty Helsinki-Vantaa Airport empty airport before a traumatic flight home to Dublin, Laurens’ twin sister was completing her studies in Biopharmaceutical Sciences at the same time. A third smaller pencil drawing considered the second lockdown when ‘covid fatigue’ set in and a ‘universal boredom’ became apparent. This discontentment became increasingly evident as the public continued to ‘wait’ for the solution to arrive, explained Conway ‘On Salthill Ritual’ referenced the coping mechanisms that the local people used in an attempt to alleviate the uncertainty and confusion in a now-familiar COVID-19 world. In this drawing, Conway references ‘The Last Messiah’ 2 a 1933 essay by the Norwegian philosopher Peter Wessel Zapffe where he suggests that the four main methods humans have used for limiting the contents of their consciousness are: isolation, anchoring, distraction, and sublimation - similar in a way to the distractions and routine of the walk/swim/cycle/run (repeat) cyclical activity evident on the Salthill Promenade. Conway predominantly works with pencil but also included in the online part of the exhibition are a series of experimental ink drawings which feature the pharmaceutical plants and devices referenced in the project. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, there are many shadows, and we live quite far north. Shadows are ‘firmer’ further south on the globe where sunlight is more plentiful. My work depicts a ‘hinterland of shadows’, hinterland being defined as the area lying beyond what is visible or known. She holds a BA in Fine Art Printmaking, a H.Dip for Art & Design Teachers from Crawford College of Art and Design, an MA in Arts & Cultural Policy from Goldsmiths, University of London, a diploma in the History of Irish and European Art from Trinity College Dublin, and an MA in Art in the Contemporary World from NCAD, Dublin. A registered art teacher with the Teaching Council of Ireland, she spent two years teaching art, craft and design in Botswana with the British Council, and has been artist-in-residence in schools across the West of Ireland through Creative Ireland and Galway County Council's Artist in School Award. She has served on the board of 126 Artist Run Gallery and on the steering committee for féach Contemporary, a visual arts centre for Galway City. Her practice is rooted in painting, and she is currently on the Turps Art School Correspondence Course, London (2023 to 2025). She has received the Arts Council Visual Arts Agility Award (2021, 2023) and a Galway City Council Individual Artist Award (2022). Her work is research-led and self-reflexive, and she often collaborates with communities of place and interest in her projects. Working through live performance, visual media (photography/film), and traditional and contemporary song, Ceara creates affective performances and artworks that address pertinent issues such as the effects of colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy on the environment, language, culture, and our lives. Ceara has presented and performed work widely in Ireland and internationally, including the Museum of Fine Art (Florida), STABLE Gallery (Washington), the Katzen Arts Centre (Washington), the Barbican (UK), the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum (UK), the Galway Arts Centre, and the National Gallery of Ireland. She is a recent Oscar and Annie Award nominee (lyrics, vocals) for Best Music for Éiru, Cartoon Saloon with composer Leo Pearson. Ceara is currently Arts Development Officer for Ealaín na Gaeltachta (traditional and contemporary practices). Their work is as both artist and creative producer on collaborative projects. It is research based and explores the impact of technologies on rural places. Shane always collaborates, most recently working with and learning from artists, plankton, environmental scientists, fungi and biologists. In their practice, Shane develops collaborative projects with artists, communities and researchers. This has included establishing and co-running the collective artist workspace ^ in Manorhamilton (2022-26), and founding the artist ensemble Drop Table (2025-date) exploring the environmental and social impact of data centres in south Dublin. They co-founded 'Levels of Compromise' in 2024, a collective of artists across Ireland who work with critical technologies.
