Hinterland

A definition for ‘hinterland’ is an area lying beyond what is visible or known. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, there are many shadows, and we live quite far north. Shadows are ‘firmer’ further south on the globe where sunlight is more plentiful. My work depicts a ‘hinterland of shadows’, hinterland being defined as the area lying beyond what is visible or known. My paintings function according to their own internal logic which overrides any ideas of memory or autobiography being imposed on it.

Stephanie McLaughlin is a visual artist living in the west of Ireland. She holds an MA in Creative Practice from Atlantic Technological University in Galway. She received an Arts Council Agility Award in 2021 and was the recipient of an individual artist bursary from Galway City council in 2019.
